• Semiotic Analysis- Explanation of  form- the opposite form:

The-Vitruvian-ManThe whole form and spears have the Drawing proportions of Leonardo da Vinci’s “Vitruvian Man1 from the opposite side and depicts the torture machine of the inquisition era the“Iron Maiden2 I interpret the conceptual resemblance of putting victims in the“Iron Maiden” and sending victims to death camps as follows: in the first case the physical characteristic of Iron Maiden enables the torturer to interrogate the victim and torture or kill a person by piercing him without seeing any blood and suffering thus increasing lack of empathy for victims. In the second case, the Fascist regime used many ways to dehumanize culturally the Jewish,Communist,homosexual,gypsy…3 people before isolating and exiling victims to death camps, 4 5 in this case modern cultural tools will act such as the torture machine of medieval and step by step will turn off the empathy and compassion switch in society.

Semiotic Analysis

  1. The Vitruvian Man is a drawing created by Leonardo da Vinci circa 1490.It is accompanied by notes based on the work of the architect Vitruvius. The drawing, which is in pen and ink on paper, depicts a male figure in two superimposed positions with his arms and legs apart and simultaneously inscribed in a circle and square. The drawing and text are sometimes called the Canon of Proportions or, less often, Proportions of Man.In addition, this picture represents a cornerstone of Leonardo’s attempts to relate man to nature. Encyclopaedia Britannica online states, “Leonardo envisaged the great picture chart of the human body he had produced through his anatomical drawings and Vitruvian Man as a cosmografia del minor mondo (cosmography of the microcosm). He believed the workings of the human body to be an analogy for the workings of the universe.” The Vitruvian Man is stored in the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice, Italy, and is displayed only occasionally.

  2. Iron Maiden : An iron maiden is a presumed torture device of the inquisition era, It’s an upright sarcophagus with spikes on the inner surfaces. Double doors open on the front, allowing entrance for the victim. In one example, eight spikes protruded from one door, 13 from the other. Once the victim was inside, the doors were closed. There, the strategically placed spikes would pierce several vital organs. However, they were relatively short spikes, so the wounds wouldn’t be instantly fatal. Instead, the victim would linger and bleed to death over several hours.

  4. Nazi extermination centers where the victims were brought to be killed as part of Hitler’s Final Solution.

  5. Final Solution : The cover name for the plan to destroy the Jews of Europe. The “Final Solution of the Jewish Question.” Beginning in December 1941, Jews were rounded up and sent to extermination camps  in the East. The program was deceptively disguised as “resettlement in the East.”
